Frequently Asked Questions
-
Not at all. Most of my clients are not in crisis. They are people who feel stuck, exhausted, or overwhelmed. You do not need to hit rock bottom before reaching out - in fact, the sooner you start, the easier things tend to get.
-
If you've been feeling anxious, overwhelmed, burnt out, or just not like yourself — and it has been going on for more than three weeks, then counselling is probably worth exploring. A good starting point is our free intro call. We will talk about what's going on for you, and I will give you an honest sense of whether I think I can help.
-
The terms are often used interchangeably, and for most practical purposes they mean the same thing. Both involve talking with a trained professional in a confidential setting to work through emotional or psychological challenges. The key thing is finding someone you feel comfortable talking to.
Getting Started
-
The first full session is about getting to know each other and understanding what has brought you to counselling. There is no pressure to share everything at once, we will move at your pace. I will also answer any questions you have about how I work.
-
Sessions are an hour long. Most clients start with weekly sessions, which helps build momentum. Over time, as things improve, many people move to fortnightly or monthly check-ins. Maybe even 30 or 45 minute sessions. We will figure out what works best for you.
-
It varies. Some people feel a significant shift immediately, some after a few sessions. Others prefer to work longer term. I don't lock you into a set number of sessions — we review how things are going regularly, and you are free to stop whenever you feel ready.
-
Yes. I work with clients online via Zoom or WhatsApp video call, which means I can support people anywhere in South Africa, and internationally. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person and for many people, they are actually easier to fit into a busy life.

Practicalities
-
Stress is usually tied to a specific cause, such as a deadline or a difficult situation, and it eases when that cause goes away. Anxiety tends to linger, even when there is no clear reason for it. It can show up as constant worry, physical tension, trouble sleeping, irritability, or a sense of dread that is hard to shake. If it has been going on for weeks and affecting your daily life, it is worth talking to someone.
-
Burnout isn't just being tired. It is a deep, chronic exhaustion that is physical, emotional, and mental. It does not go away with a holiday or a weekend off. People often describe feeling empty, cynical, flat or detached. You might still be functioning on the outside, while running on empty on the inside. If that sounds familiar, you are not alone, and it is treatable.
-
Yes and there is strong evidence to support it. Counselling helps you understand what is driving the anxiety or burnout; break unhelpful patterns; and build real skills for managing how you feel and for making lasting positive changes.
